Materials Needed for Love Monster Drawing

Just like the steps, the materials you need are simple! I love grabbing theart suppliesin one place and having them on hand because so manydirected drawingsrequire the same easy-to-use materials.

Each child will need:

  • white art paper
  • a pencil
  • an eraser
  • a fine-black marker or Sharpie pen
  • watercolor paints and a larger paintbrush (or your coloring materials of choice)

I suggest using thicker paper for painting because it can handle the water and shouldn’t tear if appropriately used.

Tips for Drawing The Love Monster

When guiding children to draw their Love Monster, there are a few things to consider.

  • Stand in a place for all to see clearly.
  • Use alarge easel, chart paper, or overhead projector to draw on if available.
  • Have kids sitat tableswith their supplies.
  • Take things slow and draw each step as you give verbal instructions. Alternatively, children can follow a set of visual step-by-step directions.
  • Give kids plenty of time to follow along and ask questions.

You will have the most success if you model the lesson this way and take your time.

Once students draw their monster, let them color it with markers, colored pencils, or watercolor paints. Using watercolor paints creates an excellent background for the Valentine’s Day monster, and kids don’t use them often, so it’s a nice treat.

Display their hard work on the classroom walls or create a cute bulletin board display in the hallway for everyone in the school to enjoy! Use a sweet Valentine’s Day header like “Have a Wild & Crazy Valentine’s Day” or “Ms. NAMES’s Love Monsters”.

Next, draw two long legs with feet at the bottom. These don’t have to be anything fancy, but encourage students to add fuzzy toes or claws.

Finishing Touches

If you don’t think students can complete the whole activity in one day, consider breaking it into two days. On day one, complete the drawing. On day two, give students colored pencils, markers, or watercolor paints to decorate their monsters. This will take time to dry, so consider that.

Students can get creative with their colors! For example, they might color the heart red and the horns purple. Other students may choose to use two colors for their whole monster. It will be fun to see the results!

How to Extend This Activity

Sometimes, drawing activities only take a few minutes, so we love finding ways to extend the activity! Here are a few ideas:

  • Have kids name their Love Monster and write a short story about it. Give them lined paper to write on and display their writing with the craft.
  • Create Valentine’s cards featuring their Love Monster. Cut, paste, and glue the Love Monster to construction paper for them to gift to someone.
  • Host a “Love Monster Gallery” where students can showcase their art. Let them show off their work to other teachers in the building or their parents during a Valentine’s Day celebration.
  • Read the book Love Monster by Rachel Bright and discuss key parts of the story, the setting, and the characters while reading.
