Soda Water Vs Sparkling Water Vs Seltzer Water

Club soda is artificially carbonated and contains added minerals, this can affect the flavor

Seltzer is also artificially carbonated but does not contain any added minerals, the flavor is more neutral. This can easily be made at home with a SodaStream or other home infusion machine.

Sparkling water is naturally carbonated. Sparkling water, like club soda, has minerals in it which can affect the flavor.

You can use whichever you like. I personally use a SodaStream Fizzi and filtered water from our reverse osmosis water filter to make homemade seltzer water.

I would personally avoid tonic water as it has added sugar!

Key Ingredients

Carbonated water: As mentioned above, choose your favorite fizzy water!

Simple syrup: This easy to make beverage booster is perfect for adding a bit of sweetness to your co*cktail, especially if using tart fruit.

Fruit: Use nearly any fruit you like. For this recipe, I used the same flavors from the variety pack of White Claws I picked up. Cherry, lime, grapefruit, and mango.

How To Make Homemade Hard Seltzer

  1. Pick your flavor and make the juice! Once made, transfer the juice to a small airtight container, as you're unlikely to use it all at once. I like to use mason jars.
    • MANGO: Blend 1 cup of mango chunks in a blender until completely smooth.
    • BLACK CHERRY: Blend 1 cup of pitted dark sweet cherries in a blender until completely smooth.
    • GRAPEFRUIT: Juice 1 fresh grapefruit.
    • LIME: Juice 3-4 limes.
  2. Prepare your co*cktail:
    1. In a co*cktail glass, add your desired fruit juice or puree.
    2. Transfer to a co*cktail glass.
    3. Add one ounce of vodka.
    4. Top the cup with ice.
  3. Make the seltzer water:
    1. If you're using a SodaStream, fill the carbonating jar with cold water. If you're not, open a can of seltzer water, and pour it into a prepared co*cktail glass.
    2. Install the jar into the machine and carbonate the water as much as you like. For me, that's 3 3-second bursts.
    3. Remove the jar from the SodaStream and fill your prepared co*cktail glass.

Batch + Storage Information

Batch:

As written, this recipe makes up to 4 homemade hard seltzer in each flavor. This recipe can be scaled easily and the prepared juice can be kept in the fridge for up to 5 days. If you've got extra fruit juice or puree, freeze them in ice cube trays for even easier homemade hard seltzers next time!

Storage:

I recommend drinking your DIY White Claw once it's made, but if you cannot finish it, simply transfer it into a small mason jar and close the lid tightly to conserve the carbonation. Store it in the fridge until ready to enjoy.

Flavor Suggestions

As previously mentioned, I started by duplicating the flavors in the White Claw variety pack I purchased, but don't let that stop you! Get creative! Here are a couple flavor ideas I am going to try next:

  • Pineapple mint: make or buy pineapple juice, and muddle with some mint leaves
  • Lemonade Hard Seltzer: Freshly squeezed lemon juice and some simple syrup or carbonate some instant pot lemonade!
  • Strawberry: make strawberry juice, strain out the seeds
  • Rhubarb: make rhubarb simple syrup!

  • Blender: I have and love a Vitamix blender. It's a decade old and hasn't skipped a beat once. Not to mention the incredible Vitamix customer service. I am so happy with my purchase!
  • SodaStream: We've got a SodaStream Fizzi at home, and it's a great little machine for adding some zing to plain water. We've used it extensively, and it's perfect for this DIY Hard Seltzer recipe!
